Litany Taking Hold Of Grace In Jesus Christ

based on Psalm 19

Today as we share our Lenten journey, we are renewed as we take hold of the simple power and grace in Jesus’ words, “Woman, behold your son,” “Behold, your mother,” so we worship in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.

Amen. Lord, we desire you and your ways more than gold, more than honey in the morning. You come to us, and while we might be judged, our reward is even greater, in your mercy. Take hold of us, to behold your grace. Clear us of our faults and sins.

People of God: The law of the Lord is perfect. He revives and saves the soul. Let us take a moment of silence to confess our sins and those times we fail to behold Jesus, and all of God’s grace.

(silence for reflection)

Friends, the commandments of the Lord are clear,  yet, he abundantly fills us. Today, return to the Lord with all your heart. Behold God’s grace in these simple powerful words: Jesus saves; Jesus forgives you all your sins. Behold; this foundation will never be destroyed; trust anew the One who purifies your heart!

Song of Grace Anew

Purify My Heart

Nelson

Purify my heart
Touch me with Your cleansing fire
Take me to the cross
Your holiness is my desire
Breathe Your life in me
Kindle a love
That flows from Your throne
Oh purify my heart
Purify my heart

By your grace and Holy Spirit, I will return to you with all my heart. Enlighten my eyes and fill my heart with rejoicing. You are my rock and my Redeemer. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O God.

People of faith: The heavens are telling of the glory of God. Everything proclaims his handiwork through all the earth. Take hold of God’s abundant grace. Stand firm! Be anew in the One who forever purifies your hearts!

Almighty and loving God, by your abundant grace, you sent Jesus to save us. You broke into our world through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, to take hold of us, for us to behold you, for us to take hold of the simple, renewing, power of your grace. In a world where we long for much more, bless us with your Spirit, to behold, to believe all you provide is abundantly more than enough: more than enough forgiveness, hope, assurance, joy, and grace. In Jesus’ name, we take hold, and we pray. Amen.

New Testament Lesson

Romans 5:1-11

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person – though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Song of Faith Anew

My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less

Mote

vs. 1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
No merit of my own I claim
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name

refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand

vs. 4
When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Clothed in his righteousness alone
Redeemed to stand before the throne

(refrain)

Gospel

John 4:5-42

So Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Jesus said her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know, we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.”

Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” Many Samaritans from the city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

based on Psalm 116:1-11

I love the Lord because he has heard my voice
and my supplications.
Because he inclined his ear to me,
Therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me;
The pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech thee, save my life!”
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
When I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your rest;
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
For you have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;
I walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I kept my faith,
Even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”;
Even when I said in fear, “No one can be trusted.” Amen.

Faith Quest meets following today’s Children’s Message!

A Behold, to Behold

EXODUS 17:1-7; ROMANS 5:1-11; JOHN 4:5-42

What catches your eye?  `Hey, look over here!’  Sometimes we say, `Not now,’ ‘Later,’ or `What did I miss?’  `Look here,’ `see,’ `take notice,’ `do not miss this’ are all summed up in the simple, powerful, renewing word, “Behold!”  As we share our Lenten journey through Jesus’ last words on the cross, today brings us to those words, “Woman, behold, your son.  Behold your mother.”  Even when Jesus is suffering on the cross, he calls us to `behold,’ to see, to take notice, to not miss, his compassion in all he is giving us.  As we also look today to the woman at the well, let us see `a behold to behold,’ let us see all that is given, the presence of Jesus, the power of Jesus, the grace of Jesus.  When it comes to all Jesus gives to meet our every need, behold, see you see in a new way, take hold of the simple renewing power in these seven words: “Believe it, and you will see it!”

1. Behold, a behold to behold, Jesus is present!
Romans 5:1-5; John.4:5-10,25-26,35

A. Like the woman at the well, behold, see, who comes to you!

B. Like his mother and John, see Jesus giving his presence to you through one another!
John 19:26-27

2. Behold, a behold to behold, Jesus is power!
Romans 5:5; John 4:10-15

A. Like the woman at the well, behold, see, who gives you life!

B. Like his mother and John, see Jesus, defining you, saving you!

3. Behold, a behold to behold, Jesus is grace!
Romans 5:2,6-11; John 4:18-29,39-42

A. Like the woman at the well, behold, see, who knows you best!

B. Like his mother and John, see Jesus who renews, restores, builds us up, to `believe it and you will see it,’ to see a behold to behold!

Song Beholding Hope & Grace

There Is None Like You

LeBlanc

refrain:
There is none like You
No one else
Can touch my heart like You do
I could search for all eternity long
And find
There is none like You

(repeat)

vs. 1
Your mercy flows
Like a river wide
And healing comes
From Your hands
Suffering children
Are safe in Your arms
There is none like You

Prayers, sung response “Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying”

As God’s people, gifted to trust and to call on God’s simple, renewing, power and grace, let us pray for the needs of all God’s people. . .

... as we pray to you, Jesus,

Lord listen to your children praying
Lord send your Spirit in this place
Lord listen to your children praying
Send us love send us power send us grace

All these things and whatever else you see we need, grant to us we pray, for into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Holy Communion will take place during our service. If you are not worshipping with us in person but would like to receive Communion, we will be offering Drive Through Communion at our building at 16200 Dodd Lane, Lakeville, Minnesota, following our indoor service. Drive Through Communion will be available between 10:15am & 10:30am.

For those worshiping with us in person, we receive communion through intinction; that is, you will receive the bread, the host, then dip into the glass of choice, either a red wine in the chalice closest to the host, or in a light colored non-alcoholic grape juice. All are welcome.

We also offer gluten free and pre-packaged options. Please take these options before arriving at the host to receive a blessing.

The Words of Institution

In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Songs During Holy Communion

What a Beautiful Name

Fielding

You were the Word at the beginning
One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ
What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus You brought heaven down
My sin was great Your love was greater
What could separate us now
What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Death could not hold You
The veil tore before You
You silence the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring
The praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again

You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the Kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

What a powerful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

The body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace this day, and on into life everlasting.
Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, you gave your Son both as a sacrifice for sin and a model of the godly life. Enable us to receive him always with thanksgiving, and to conform our hearts, and our lives to his, through Jesus Christ, the Lord of life. Amen.

Friends, return to The Lord your God with all your heart; take hold of the simple power of God’s saving Word and grace! The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Going Anew in Glory & Hope

Your Grace Is Enough

Maher

vs. 1

You wrestle with the sinner’s
Restless heart
You lead us by still waters
Into mercy
And nothing can keep us apart
So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember your promise oh God

Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me

bridge:
So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember your promise oh God

refrain 2:
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
Your grace is enough
Heaven reaches out to us
Your grace is enough for me
God I see
Your grace is enough
I’m covered in Your love
Your grace is enough for me
For me
