Trusting God’s Grace & Light Transform, Change Everything

BASED ON PSALM 50

Today we celebrate, our souls awake, we are transformed, by the One who treasures us first; light and grace change everything, so we worship, in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.

Amen. Our God speaks and summons us and all the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting. The light of God shines on us to transform us in every way, so we may go forward in faith.

People of God: The heavens declare God’s righteousness. Let us take a moment of silence to confess our sins, and those times we have failed to trust The Spirit fills us and changes us with light and grace.

(silence for reflection)

Friends; trust anew, the One who treasures you first, is filled with truth and mercy. Today hear these words of grace that transform us and change everything: Jesus saves; Jesus forgives you all your sins. Trust this is only the beginning! The Spirit is here, flooding this place, and the atmosphere!

Holy Spirit
You are welcome here
Come flood this place
And fill the atmosphere
Your glory God
Is what our hearts long for
To be overcome
By Your presence Lord
Your presence Lord

The Lord has made us his faithful ones. We have heard his call to be gathered close to him. We are set free. Through Jesus, we are God’s changed people. His Light and grace transform us, and He forever changes the world.

People of Faith: The Lord comes to us and does not stay silent. Listen to him! See how dazzling Jesus is! The Lord of all life changes everything! Be renewed by Light and grace! Jesus has come! Be overcome by His presence! The One who treasures you first, is your God, your salvation, all your hearts long for; Holy Spirit, you are so welcome here!

Almighty and loving God, on the mountain, in the transfiguration of your Son, you showed your glory. In our ever-changing world, give us the faith to see your light endures, shining bright. Be our treasured transformation. Fill us with your Spirit, to trust anew each new morning is only the beginning to so much more. Change our outlook, our spirit, our hearts, our purpose, our devotion, our worship, our ministry, your Church. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Old Testament

EXODUS 34:29–35

Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

(New Revised Standard Version)

The New Testament

2 CORINTHIANS 3:12–4:2

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

(New Revised Standard Version)

Song Trusting Anew in Light & Grace

How Good, Lord, to Be Here

Robinson

vs. 1
How good Lord to be here
Your glory fills the night
Your face and garments like the sun
Shine with unborrowed light

vs. 2
How good Lord to be here
Your beauty to behold
Where Moses and Elijah stand
Your messengers of old

vs. 5
How good Lord to be here
Yet we may not remain
But since you bid us leave the mount
Come with us to the plain

Gospel

LUKE 9:28–36

Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” - not knowing what he had said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

(New Revised Standard Version)

Stating Our Faith

BASED ON REVELATION 21:5–7

God’s Son who was born in a manger, who went forward to make us all one through his death and resurrection, will come again.  Trusting every gift of light and grace anew in every epiphany of Emmanuel, we boldly share our faith, for the light of the One who treasures us first, has come, and the darkness will not overcome it.

God who sits upon the throne says, “Behold, I make all things new. Write these words for they are trustworthy and true. It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain the water of life without payment. They who conquer shall have their heritage, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. Amen.

Treasured Transformation

EXODUS 34:29–35; 2 CORINTHIANS 3:12–4:2; LUKE 9:28–36

`If you change the paint, then you are going to have to change the tile.  And if you change the tile, then you are going to have to change the carpet.  And if you change the carpet, then you are going to have to change the furniture.’  Some times we like change.  Some times we do not.  Perhaps one reason we may be hesitant or resist change at times, is we are not sure where the changes are going to stop.  `What if changing `that’, means we end up having to change `this’ as well?’  Today as we celebrate The Transfiguration Of Our Lord, we are reminded this treasured transformation up on the mountain is only the next in a whole list of changes.  God’s grace began changing things a long time ago, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  Then `The Word became flesh to live among us.’  Next Jesus was baptized and the next list of epiphanies was revealed.  On the mountain top, Jesus and why Jesus came change once again, and who we are changes once again as well.  Thanks be to God, a new look, a new outlook, a new direction, a new purpose, a new outcome and a new starting point are just a few of the treasured transformations that go on and on in God’s light and grace!

1. In the Transfiguration Of Our Lord, The Spirit fills us with light and grace to see the treasured transformations breaking forth!

A. God’s grace began changing things a long time ago.
Genesis 1

B. In the birth of Jesus, a change is made and God comes to us, in the Word that became flesh to live among us.
John 1

C. In the Baptism of Jesus, the carpenter’s apprentice, The Christ, True God and True Man, changes, to answer the call to preach, teach, heal and perform miracles for 3 years.
Luke 3:21-22

D. In the Transfiguration Of Our Lord, in the light and grace of this epiphany, more treasured transformations break forth!

i. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in scenery.’  Where we are is different!
Luke 9:28-30

ii. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in outlook.’ What we see is different!
2 Corinthians 4:1-2; Luke 9:32

iii. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in look.’  How we are seen is different!
Exodus 32:29; Luke 9:29

iv. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in direction.’  Where we go is different!
Exodus 34:32-34; Luke 9:33

v. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in purpose and mission.’  What we do is different!
Luke 9:31,35-36

vi. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in outcome.’  How we respond is different!
2 Corinthians 3:12-18; Luke 9:36

vii. Jesus is transfigured to transform us, and to bless us with `a change in starting point.’  Where we begin next is different!
Luke 9:28-29

2. The birth of a child, the death of a loved one, a mountain top experience, a touch of reality; so many events and moments and people, every day, can put into motion so many unanticipated changes.  As we say thanks to God for the epiphanies sent our way this Epiphany season, let us trust and celebrate the list of changes and revelations and joys and callings and treasured transformations will continue as we enter the season and the journey of Lent.  The One who treasures us first is changed to change us, and the list of changes goes on and on in God’s light and grace!
Luke 9:28, 35

Song Anew in Spirit & Grace

Jesus, My Lord

Fischer

refrain:
Have you seen Jesus my Lord
He’s here in plain view
Take a look open your eyes
He’ll show it to you

vs. 1
Have you ever looked at a sunset
With the sky all mellowin’ red
Seen the clouds suspended like feathers
Then I say  You’ve seen Jesus my Lord

(refrain)

vs. 4
Have you ever stood in a family
With the Lord there in your midst
Seen the face of Christ on each other
Then I say  You’ve seen Jesus my Lord

(refrain)

... as we pray to you, Jesus,

Change us, transform us, by your Spirit, your light and your grace.

All these things and whatever else you see we need, grant to us we pray, for into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Holy Communion will take place during our service. If you are not worshipping with us in person but would like to receive Communion, we will be offering Drive Through Communion at our building at 16200 Dodd Lane, Lakeville, Minnesota, following our indoor service. Drive Through Communion will be available between 10:15am & 10:30am.

For those worshiping with us in person, we receive communion through intinction; that is, you will receive the bread, the host, then dip into the glass of choice, either a red wine in the chalice closest to the host, or in a light colored non-alcoholic grape juice. All are welcome.

We also offer gluten free and pre-packaged options. Please take these options before arriving at the host to receive a blessing.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Carol During Holy Communion

Here I Am, Lord

Schutte

I the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save
I who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them
Whom shall I send

refrain:
Here I am Lord
Is it I Lord
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go Lord
If you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart

I the Lord of snow and rain
I have borne my people’s pain
I have wept for love of them
They turn away
I will break their hearts of stone
Give them hearts for love alone
I will speak my word to them
Whom shall I send

(refrain)

I the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide
‘Til their hearts be satisfied
I will give my life to them
Whom shall I send

(refrain twice)

The body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace this day, and on into life everlasting.
Amen.

Let us pray.
Pour out upon us the spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of those whom you have fed with one heavenly food; through Jesus Christ, the Lord of life. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace, for you are transformed, in the saving light and grace of the One who treasures you first! In the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Let us go in the peace of Christ, celebrating the love of God, living anew in the transforming light and grace of the One who treasures us first, together serving The Lord of life.
Thanks be to God!
