Theodulph of Orleans

refrain:
All glory laud and honor

To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring

vs. 1

Our King and Blessed One

(refrain)

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna to the Son of David!

The Processional Gospel

LUKE 19:28–40

Jesus went up to Jerusalem. When Jesus had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” So those who were sent departed and found it as it had been told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” The disciples said, “The Lord needs it.” Then they brought the colt to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on it, they set Jesus on the colt. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As Jesus was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these people were silent, the stones would shout out.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

Let us pray:
Gracious God, we praise you and thank you, for your great acts of love to redeem us and to save us. As we remember your triumphant entry into Jerusalem, let us also remember your faithful passion to complete the Father’s mission of salvation. Jesus, you knew what would happen that week, and still you went forward. By your  power and grace, keep your heart on us, bless us with faith to hold these branches, to lift up your name, with hearts full of praise, to see your grace through Jesus’ trial, death and resurrection. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

A Litany of the Sacrifice & Passion of Jesus Christ

This is the day that the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

We gather today, to remember God’s saving grace in the passion and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the One who keeps his heart on us; so we worship in the name of The Father and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit.
Amen. “Jesus withdrew from the disciples, he knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will be done but your will be done.’”

Friends in Christ, let us offer silent prayers of confession and strength to stay awake and to keep watch through this Holy Week.

(silence for reflection)

Faithful Jesus, keep us faithful; grace us this week through your sacrifice, to be there with you in prayer and discipleship.

Song of Sacrifice & Hope

Were You There

Barton

vs. 1
Were you there
When they crucified my Lord
Were you there
When they crucified my Lord
Oh
Sometimes it causes me
To tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there
When they crucified my Lord

“One of the criminals hanging beside Jesus said, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.’ The other protested saying, ‘Do you not fear God? We have been condemned justly and are getting what we deserve, but this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’”

Friends, trust when you call on Jesus you are remembered, when you feel far away from him, he is chasing after you.  Jesus, today, we confess we are not always there for you, we do not always call on your name.  We thank you through your sacrifice and passion you tell us, “Today we are with you in paradise.”

Song of Sacrifice & Hope

Were You There

Barton

vs. 2
Were you there
When they nailed him to the tree
Were you there
When they nailed him to the tree
Oh
Sometimes it causes me
To tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there
When they nailed him to the tree

“Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Having said this, he died. When the centurion saw this, he praised God and said, ‘Surely this man was innocent.’”

Friends of the Savior, today we remember Jesus’ sacrifice included taking the form of a servant, laying down his life for his friends, and being obedient to the Father, even unto death. In the life-changing, amazing power and grace of our Savior, the message of the week to come is, this: God in Jesus Christ saves you, and Jesus, truly and completely, forgives you of all your sins, blessing you to more passionately trust God alone keeps his heart on you, and will be there with you, one and all!

Song of Sacrifice & Hope

Were You There

Barton

vs. 3
Were you there
When they laid him in the tomb
Were you there
When they laid him in the tomb
Oh
Sometimes it causes me
To tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there
When they laid him in the tomb

Almighty God, you sent your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to be there for us, to take our lives upon himself as he went forward into Jerusalem to suffer death on the cross. Grant that through your passion and grace, we might receive mercy and faith for all eternity. In all that you finish, begin now anew, to bless us in new ways with your grace alone. Give us courage and strength this week, all our days, to keep our hearts on the One who keeps his heart on us, to be there for you, to obediently stay close to you, as we look to the glory of the resurrection. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

New Testament Lesson

PHILIPPIANS 2:5–11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in a human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess; that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(New Revised Standard Version)

Song of Hope & Grace Anew

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

African American Spiritual

vs. 1
I want Jesus
To walk with me
I want Jesus
To walk with me
All along my
Pilgrim journey
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

vs. 2
In my trials
Lord walk with me
In my trials
Lord walk with me
When my heart is
Almost breaking
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

vs. 3
When I’m in trouble
Lord walk with me
When I’m in trouble
Lord walk with me
When my head is
Bowed in sorrow
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

Gospel - The Passion of Our Lord

LUKE 23:1–49

Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.” Then Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “You say so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for an accusation against this man.” But they were insistent and said, “He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began, even to this place.”

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Jesus off to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. Herod questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate. That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this, they had been enemies.

Pilate then called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed he has done nothing to deserve death. I will therefore have him flogged and release him.”

Then they all shouted out together, “Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us!” (This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.) Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again; but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him.” But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished.

As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us;’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing.

And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, Jesus breathed his last.

When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man was innocent.” And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Statement Of Faith During Lent

BASED ON PSALM 116:1–11

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Passionate Hearts

LUKE 19:28-40; PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11; LUKE 23:1-49

Do you ever run out of time to get done what needs doing, to be effective, to finish completely, to be passionate, to put your heart into everything?  How do you feel when the deadline is extended, when someone says, `You have an additional week’?  As we share Palm Sunday, The Passion Of Our Lord, as we hear Jesus’ triumphant entry and reflect on his suffering and passion, we hear God’s passionate heart in Christ alone, changes everything, is all we need, beats the crowd every time, fulfills mission and salvation.  As we enter Holy Week, let us empty ourselves of everything drawing our hearts away from the Savior; let us trust God keeps our hearts filled with the passion and grace of Christ alone!

1. God’s passionate heart, changes everything, in Christ alone!
Luke 19:38

A. The cries of the crowd change from `Hosanna’ to `Crucify.’

B. Grace changes us from broken to restored.
Philippians 2:5,11

2. God’s passionate heart, is all we need, in Christ alone!
Luke 19:31,34

A. God’s grace makes known all God’s needs.

B. God’s greatest need this week, for eternity, is you.

3. God’s passionate heart, beats the crowd, in Christ alone!
Luke 23:40-47

A. Peer pressure began long ago, and echoes through the ages.

B.   The power of One gives power to be God’s faithful ones.
Luke 19:40

4. God’s passionate heart, fulfills mission and salvation, in Christ alone!

A. Jesus knew the mission ahead, and still goes forward, to face Satan, to beat Satan, to tear that kingdom down.
Philippians 2:7-9

B. Trust The One keeping his heart on us, is forever faithful, passionate, powerful, peaceful, overflowing, compassionate, driven, leaving room for God’s grace and passion alone, to save you!
Luke 23

Song of Passion & Grace

Satan, We’re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down

Capers

Satan
We’re gonna tear your kingdom down
Satan
We’re gonna tear your kingdom down
You’ve been building your kingdom
All over this world
Satan
We’re gonna tear your kingdom down

Satan
We’re gonna pray your kingdom down
Satan
We’re gonna sing your kingdom down
You’ve been building your kingdom
All over this world
Satan
We’re gonna tear your kingdom down

Satan
The cross has torn your kingdom down
Satan
The cross has torn your kingdom down
You’ve been building your kingdom
All over this world
Satan
The cross has torn your kingdom down

... as we pray to you, Jesus,

Jesus remember me
When you come into your Kingdom
Jesus remember me
When you come into your Kingdom

All these things and whatever else you see we need, grant to us we pray, for into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, and in the power and passion of your saving grace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Holy Communion will take place during our service. If you are not worshipping with us in person but would like to receive Communion, we will be offering Drive Through Communion at our building at 16200 Dodd Lane, Lakeville, Minnesota, following our indoor service. Drive Through Communion will be available between 10:15am & 10:30am.

For those worshiping with us in person, we receive communion through intinction; that is, you will receive the bread, the host, then dip into the glass of choice, either a red wine in the chalice closest to the host, or in a light colored non-alcoholic grape juice. All are welcome.

We also offer gluten free and pre-packaged options. Please take these options before arriving at the host to receive a blessing.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Song During Holy Communion

The Wonderful Cross

Watts / Tomlin

When I survey
The wondrous cross
On which the Prince
Of glory died
My richest gain
I count but loss
And pour contempt
On all my pride

See from His head
His hands His feet
Sorrow and love
Flow mingled down
Did e’er such love
And sorrow meet
Or thorns compose
So rich a crown

refrain:
Oh the wonderful cross
Oh the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
And find that I may truly live
Oh the wonderful cross
Oh the wonderful cross
All who gather here
By grace draw near
And bless Your name

Were the whole realm
Of nature mine
That were an off’ring
Far too small
Love so amazing
So divine
Demands my soul
My life my all

(refrain)

Stay Here and Keep Watch With Me

Berthier

Stay here and keep watch with me
The hour has come
Stay here and keep watch with me
Watch and pray

(repeat as led)

The body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace this day, this life-changing week, and on into life everlasting.
Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, you gave your Son both as a sacrifice for sin and a model of the godly life. Enable us to receive him always with thanksgiving, and to conform our hearts, and our lives to his, through Jesus Christ, the Lord of life. Amen.

Friends, return to The Lord your God with all your heart; take hold, of the One who keeps his heart on you, in the passion of God’s saving grace alone! The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace as you follow The Christ this week with renewed passion! In the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.
Amen.
