(great version featuring children)

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing, I will sing.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.
With my mouth, will I make known,
Thy faithfulness, Thy faithfulness,
With my mouth, will I make known,
Thy faithfulness to all generations.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing, I will sing.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.
— Exodus 20:1-3

Before the days of the latest technologies to keep us on schedule and to track important tasks, there were 'Post-it' notes everywhere. Before 'Post-it' notes, there were tablets of paper. The 'to do list' and 'the things to remember and not forget' were written down on tablets. A common use of this system to keep things in order was to put the most important items at the top.

Moses goes up the mountain after helping God's people be delivered out of slavery. Moses comes down the mountain, carrying two tablets, a list on each tablet, with God having written what to do and what not to do, with God having written what to remember and not forget, with God having written at the top what was most important: "I am the Lord your God ... You shall have no other gods before me."

Today's advances in keeping things in order are useful and helpful. Long ago, our mission, our purpose, our journey, our conviction, was all written on two tablets. The tablets, this list, reveals God's saving purpose; grace breaks in to deliver priceless gifts, to keep order. Even when we fail to keep at the top of the list what matters most, Thy faithfulness to all generations blesses us anew with forgiveness and salvation, and we sing of the mercies of The Lord forever!

Let us pray: Jesus, today reveal to me again the purpose, the value of The Tablets, Your Tablets. When I forget or fall short, I will sing of your mercies, and my mouth will make known Thy faithfulness is Thy purpose and Thy mission, in your grace alone. Bless me with a new sense of purpose, to read, to live, to stand firm in what God has written at the top: "I am The Lord Your God!" In your name, I am reminded what forever belongs at the top, as I pray. Amen.
