Come to the Water

Russ & Marsha Stevens

And Jesus said
Come to the water
Stand by my side
I know you are thirsty
You won't be denied
I felt every teardrop
When in darkness you cried
And I long to remind you
That for those tears I died

You said you'd come and
Share all my sorrows
You said you'd be there
For all my tomorrows
I came so close to
Sending you away
But just like you promised
You came here to stay
I just had to pray

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient along the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.”
— Number 21:4-5

When you are thirsty, what is best at quenching that thirst? What satisfies your hunger best?

What do you and your spirit hunger and thirst for? Acceptance. Truth. Forgiveness. Healing. Hope. Conviction. Commitment. Strength. Courage. Justice. Freedom. Change. Mission. Drive. Community. Self. Mercy. Christ. Grace alone.

God had saved God's people and used Moses to free the slaves from Egypt. God had saved God's people and led them across the Red Sea. God had saved God's people by watching over them and protecting them and leading them through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. And still the people were hungry and thirsty, hungry for peace and hope and certainty, thirsty for assurance in God's grace, starving to believe in God's faithfulness alone!

As we believe God hungers and thirsts for His people and sent his only Son, let us also thirst and hunger to be fed and watered, by God's hand. Today, come to the water, be assured in grace alone, believe your hunger is satisfied and your every thirst is quenched, just as he promised; Christ has come here to stay!

Let us pray: Jesus today I confess I often hunger and thirst for things of this world. Today, I believe anew, you satisfy, you quench all my body and heart and spirit long for. By your Spirit, I also trust I am alive and anew in these truths: You thirst for me; You hunger for me; You long to remind me for those tears you died. I hear you calling me to come to the water, to drink and drink and drink, and to never be thirsty again. In grace alone, I pray. Amen.
