Awake awake awake my soul
God resurrect these bones
From death to life for You alone
Awake my soul

vs. 1
Breathe on me breath of God
Breathe on me
Breathe on me breath of God
Breathe on me
I come alive I’m alive
When You breathe on me
I come alive I’m alive
When You breathe on me

(refrain)

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came the sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

Song Living Anew Forever In The Spirit

Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying

Tomlin

refrain:
Awake awake awake my soul
God resurrect these bones
From death to life for You alone
Awake my soul

Today we are invited to take a deep breath in grace, to trust anew the One who awakes our souls, blesses us, one and all, to be the Church of Jesus Christ, so we worship in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.

Amen. “No one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; and that foundation is Jesus Christ.”

Friends of the Church of Jesus Christ: Jesus is the sure foundation, and yet at times we know, “the stone which we have rejected is the head of the corner.” Let us take a moment of silence to confess our sins, and our failure to take each breath, guarding the foundation of His Word and holy Church.

(silence for reflection)

Friends who trust The Spirit: “There is one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Take a deep breath in The Spirit and in God’s grace: You are the living body of Christ, Jesus saves, Jesus forgives you all your sins. Celebrate God brings us together in Jesus Christ. Faithfully be God’s Church, God’s people; be his living sanctuary!

Song of Call & Hope

Sanctuary

Flaishler, Moulden

Lord prepare me
To be a sanctuary
Pure and holy
Tried and true
With thanksgiving
I’ll be a living
Sanctuary for you

Jesus, we thank you, and praise you for your faithfulness to your Church. Let us take a deep breath, for you renew our spirit to follow you; to go declare your grace to the ends of the earth, to be your faithful witnesses.

Friends of Jesus: Celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Church! Jesus has made us family; brothers and sisters. Be his living sanctuary! Take a deep breath and believe anew: We “are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.”

Song of Call & Hope

Sanctuary

Flaishler, Moulden

Lord prepare me
To be a sanctuary
Pure and holy
Tried and true
With thanksgiving
I’ll be a living
Sanctuary for you

Loving God, today, we join with our brothers and sisters around the world, and we thank you for the gift of the Church. Let us feel you in this very room; fill us with your Holy Spirit; awake our souls; help us take a breath, a deep fresh breath, as you open our hearts, as you make us one, as we make you our God and our neighbors first in new ways. May we trust anew, every day is a day full of grace. Restore us once again to boldly answer your call, to be the body of Christ, and individually members of it. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Song of Grace & Calling

O Day Full of Grace

Danish Folk Hymn

vs. 1
O day full of grace that now we see
Appearing on earth’s horizon
Bring light from our God that we may be
Replete in his joy this season
God shine for us now in this dark place
Your name on our hearts emblazon

vs. 4
God came to us then at Pentecost
His Spirit new life revealing
That we might no more from him be lost
All darkness for us dispelling
His flame will the mark of sin efface
And bring to us all his healing

John 14:8-17, 25-27

Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. ... I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

Luther’s Explanation of the Third Article of The Apostle’ Creed

I believe that I cannot by my own understanding or effort believe in Jesus Christ my Lord, or come to him.

But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and kept me in true faith.

In the same way, he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it united with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian Church day after day he fully forgives my sins and the sins of all believers.

On the last day he will raise me and all the dead and give me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most certainly true. Amen.

Take A Breath

GENESIS 11:1-9; ACTS 2:1-21; JOHN 14:8-17, 25-27

People.  You cannot always get along with them, and where would we be without them?  How strange is it, God works to perfect His plan for creation, then turns it over to people, those created in His image?  How strange is it God perfects His plan for salvation, then turns making this message known over to His people?  God seems to be a poor manager, a poor business owner, a poor leader.  Would God not be wiser, more efficient, without us?  Yet, God says, `Where would I be without you?' `Where would The Church be without Me?’  `Where would you be, if I was not with you?’  The Holy Spirit, God’s grace; where would we be without God’s faithfulness?  As we celebrate Pentecost, the Church’s birthday, let us take a breath, a deep fresh breath, take in, and trust anew, we are God’s people, God’s Church, His witnesses; feel His Spirit, His grace, stir us up, move us, save us, give new life, to one and all!

1. By The Holy Spirit, take a breath, a deep breath, for God calls us, graces us, to be The Church, to be one in The Spirit, to be the people of God!

A. As we take a breath, a deep breath in The Spirit, we will see The Spirit pulling together God’s people.
Genesis 11:4,9; Acts 2:1

i. This is a "me for me's sake" world we live in.  The Lord will have none of that for his people.

ii. God brings us together not to do our own thing; to pull us together as The Church in The Spirit.

B. As we take a breath, a deep fresh breath in The Spirit, The Spirit is empowering/equipping, all of God’s people.
Acts 2:2-4,12,17; John 14:12

i. Every one is significant.  Building up each other is vital.

ii. God’s people are empowered/equipped as we take each new breath, putting to use The Lord’s gifts given to us.

C. As we take a breath, a deep breath in The Spirit, we see The Spirit overcoming obstacles, trials, temptations, despair, for God’s people in The Spirit.
Genesis 11:5-9; John 14:8-9, 25-27

i. The early believers had many challenges to overcome.  The challenges have not gone away.
ii. God’s perfection will overcome our imperfections.

D. As we take a breath, a deep breath in The Spirit, we see The Spirit personally calling and connecting God’s people to The Spirit.
Genesis 11:4,5; Acts 2:4, 21; John 14:8, 9, 11, 13-17

i. It is not easy to be real, authentic, personal.

ii. Jesus wants us to have a personal relationship with him.  All God gives us, God gives personally to us.

E. As we take a breath, a deep breath, we see The Spirit leading and living in us as God’s people.
Acts 2:17-18; John 14:12, 15

i. The Spirit makes us alive - breathing and living together.  We cannot play it safe, or become stagnant.

ii. The Gospel is not safe, stagnant, isolated.  The Spirit lives in our midst, calling us to live, breathe, grow, prosper, surrender, believe, witness, prophesy, nurture, celebrate!

F. As we take a breath, a deep breath, we see The Spirit blesses everyone for all eternity.
Acts 2:21; John 14:16,25-27

i. We are `eternal people.'  None of us is, not here, forever.

ii. Knowing we are eternal people in The Spirit gives courage, passion, strength, conviction to be `now people.'

2. This summer, today, in the hope and power of Pentecost, take a breath, a deep fresh new breath, for The Holy Spirit, The Advocate, The Christ, God’s grace and mercy, are calling, leading, empowering, equipping, saving The Church, you and me, and all God’s people!

Holy Communion will take place during our service. If you are not worshipping with us in person but would like to receive Communion, we will be offering Drive Through Communion at our building at 16200 Dodd Lane, Lakeville, Minnesota, following our indoor service. Drive Through Communion will be available between 10:15am & 10:30am.

In order to better serve you in this troubling times, the way we receive Communion has changed slightly. You will be offered a self-contained Communion serving. Each capsule has two layers. The first layer is a thin, clear, cellophane layer which reveals the host. Under the second layer you will find the alcohol free juice. Volunteers will be happy to take you waste after you receive Communion.

The Words of Institution

In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free
And my shame is undone
In Your Presence Lord

You are welcome here
Come flood this place
And fill the atmosphere
Your glory God
Is what our hearts long for
To be overcome
By Your presence Lord
Your presence Lord

bridge:
Let us become
More aware
Of Your Presence
Let us experience
The glory of
Your goodness

(repeat bridge 3x)

Holy Spirit
You are welcome here
Come flood this place
And fill the atmosphere

Is what our hearts long for
To be overcome

Amen.

Let us pray.
Pour out upon us the spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of those whom you have fed with one heavenly food; through Jesus Christ, The Lord of life. Amen.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace, as you take each breath, each deep fresh breath, in the living grace of Jesus Christ. In the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit.

Let us go in the peace of Christ, celebrating the love of God, and serving the Lord of life.
Thanks be to God!
