Infant Holy, Infant Lowly

Reed

Infant holy Infant lowly
For his bed a cattle stall
Oxen lowing little knowing
Christ the Child is Lord of all
Swiftly winging angels singing
Bells are ringing tidings bringing
Christ the Child is Lord of all
Christ the Child is Lord of all

When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples, and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”
— Matthew 11:2-3

We all have things that wear us down. This is normal. We all have things that take the energy right out of us. This is normal. We all have things that try to grab hold of us. This is normal. Unfortunately, we also often have things that imprison us, bind us up, wrap themselves around us, keep hold of us. This is hurtful.

We need to know the chains can be broken. We need to know the door can be opened. We need to know the hope of freedom. We need to know the freedom of hope. We need to know comfort and joy.

John the Baptist was in prison. He did not deserve to be there, any more than you deserve to have circumstances keep you bound. Even in prison, John was trying to stay positive. John needed to know he was not trusting in vain. John was looking for the freedom that came with hope. John was looking for the hope that came with freedom. John was looking for comfort and joy. John was looking to hear some good news to sustain him, because he was not sure that he could make it, if he had to wait for another.

"Are you the one who is to come?" "Christ the Child is Lord of all, Christ the Child is Lord of all!"

Let us pray: God of grace and hope and freedom, today I tell you many things keep my spirit locked up. Some things that have a hold on me, are a result of circumstance, or because I do not fully trust you. Some things that have a hold on me, leave me feeling helpless, as if I will never know again, freedom or hope, comfort or joy. Today, I give you all these things that have hold on me, and I ask you to hold me. Renew my faith, for you are the one, you are The Christ, The Child, The Lord of all! Amen.
