O Christmas Tree

Anschutz

O Christmas tree O Christmas tree
Thou hast a wonderful message
O Christmas tree O Christmas tree
Thou hast a wonderful message
Thou dost proclaim the Savior's birth
Goodwill to men and peace on earth
O Christmas tree O Christmas tree
Thou hast a wonderful message

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal places.”
— Matthew 11:7-8

What do you hope to find when you look at your tree? What do you hope to find when you look under your tree? Is there something special you are hoping to find there this year? Are you looking for comfort and joy wrapped in a box with paper and a bow? Are you looking for something more this year?

What do you hope to find in these final days of Advent this year, as you watch for and prepare for Christ’s return one day, as you anticipate Christmas this year? What do you hope to find each day, in your daily living? Any chance you are looking for more?

Some who went out to John the Baptist were looking for someone dressed in a soft robe, someone unique and special, and yet all wrapped up in proper packaging. Jesus asks them, what did you hope to find? Why did you bother to go out there looking? What do you really need, and what are you really needing to find? Jesus is still asking us, in this final week before Christmas 2022, what are you looking for, a gift, or The Gift, and so much more?

Let us pray: Lord, I get stuck looking for the same things, time after time, Christmas after Christmas, day after day. Help me look at the Christmas tree, to look for the message of my Savior, to look for my Savior who died and rose again to make my life forever green, and full of life. In this final week before Christmas open my heart to look not for soft robes, not for a gift that I think will give comfort and joy; help me rather look for you, The Gift of peace and hope and life, God's Gift, ready to be found every day where ever I look. Amen.
