Silent Night

Gruber

Silent night holy night
All is calm all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
— Luke 2:6-7

Silence is precious. We long for it. Oh, how we long for silence and peace in our lives and schedules and hearts and world. Oh, to know the silence that an infant knows. Oh, to know the silence The Holy Infant knows.

This is the most silent of nights! This is the night that ushers in silence! This is the night that gives us a silence, all other silence is compared to, falls short of. This is a night of silence, which gives us such an incredible gift, and yet, even this gift of comfort and joy is only a glimpse of the silence that we will know one day, the silence of heavenly peace.

Thanks to the silence of God's first born Son, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger, we know the hope of this silent night.

Thanks be to God, the silence we know in Christ, the silence that we know in Christmas, the silence of this night, the silence of heavenly peace one day; such silence is only possible because on this holy night, that first silent night, the earth and its people heard a sound they had never heard before.

May all our hearts be filled with silence, thanks to the greatest sound of all, the sound of the greatest comfort and the greatest joy, the sound of God's grace, the sound of Emmanuel, the sound of Christmas!

Let us pray: Lord I like silence, and yet, I have no idea what true silence and peace are. Today I thank you and praise you and glorify you and honor you for the sound of Christmas. Thank you for heavenly peace! In the silence of this night, open my heart and faith to hear your voice, to hear the noise of comfort and joy in your grace breaking forth, to know in you, I, too, can sleep in heavenly peace. Amen.
