Sunday Worship - The Second Sunday in Lent

God whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard
And took their flight
Hear us we humbly pray
And where the Gospel day
Sheds not its glorious ray
Let there be light

Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, ‘See, here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”
— Luke 13:6-9

Do you like deadlines? Do you like when deadlines are extended, when you are given more time than you expected?

The fig tree was planted, but the owner gave the tree more time to bear fruit. God made a covenant with the people, and God sent Jesus, his living Word. Lent is God's gift of time to us, for us, to see, we are blessed by God's grace with time to bear fruit, to repent, to see God's glorious ray, to see Chaos and darkness took their flight, to see God has time beyond our sense of time, overflowing, to save us!

Let us pray: Jesus, shed your glorious ray on me, and let there be light, your light. I do not always attend to everything when I should. I even put you aside at times. Keep your heart on me, overflow me with your grace. As this Lenten season continues, give me a new sense of urgency and intentionality, to make God and my neighbors first. Bless me to trust by your grace you give me time to bear fruit. In Jesus' name alone, I humbly pray. Amen.
