I will sing of the mercies
Of the Lord forever
I will sing
I will sing
I will sing of the mercies
Of the Lord forever
I will sing
Of the mercies of the Lord

With my mouth
Will I make known
Thy faithfulness
Thy faithfulness
With my mouth
Will I make known
Thy faithfulness
To all generations

I will sing of the mercies
Of the Lord forever
I will sing
I will sing
I will sing of the mercies
Of the Lord forever
I will sing
Of the mercies of the Lord

Then God spoke all these words: I am The Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.
— Exodus 20:1

Before our current days of numerous electronic applications, there were 'post-it' notes everywhere. Before 'post-it' notes, there were tablets of paper. The 'to do list' and 'the things to remember and not forget' were written down on tablets. A common use of this system to keep things in order was to put the most important items at the top.

Moses goes up the mountain after helping God's people be delivered out of slavery. Moses later comes down the mountain, carrying two tablets, a list on each tablet, with God having written what to do and what not to do, with God having written what to remember and not forget, with God having written at the top what was most important: "I am The Lord your God ... You shall have no other gods before me."

Today's advances in keeping things in order are indeed quite useful and helpful. Long ago, God's mission, God's desire for us, God's longing for us to stay close and whole, was written on a tablet. Most people sadly limit this list, to only being about rules.

God longs for us to keep our hearts on Christ alone. Our 'to do' list is given to us, to keep order, for us to know the joy and peace of staying close, not hurting our God or others, all who are close to us. Even though we fall short, God's heart overflows. The One who keeps his heart on us, leads us, saves us, is merciful, faithful, throughout all generations! At the top of the tablets are these words, words to remember, and to never forget, words which are most important: "I am The Lord your God."

Let us pray: Jesus, today reveal to me your heart overflows; on The Tablets, in your Word, in your grace. When I forget or fall short, I will sing of your mercies, and my mouth will make known thy faithfulness overflows, in Christ alone. Keep your heart on me. By your Spirit, you will keep order, I will stay close, I will read, live, stand firm in what God has written at the top: "I am The Lord Your God!" In your name and grace alone, I pray. Amen.
